Objectives
Learn how to operate a 3D printer safely and independently to create your first printed object from a digital model. This introductory session helps participants understand how 3D printing works, how to prepare and slice files, and how to apply best practices for machine operation and maintenance.
Program
1️⃣ Introduction to Additive Manufacturing
- Understanding the principles of additive manufacturing and how layer-by-layer printing works.
- A short history of 3D printing — from industrial prototyping to education and everyday use.
- Overview of main technologies: – Selective Laser Sintering, – Stereolithography, – Fused Deposition Modeling
- Advantages and limitations: precision, materials, cost, and printing time.
2️⃣ Machine Overview
- Presentation of key components: nozzle, heated bed, axes, extruder, sensors, and print head.
- Understanding how each part contributes to the printing process.
- Machine startup, calibration, and preparation steps.
- Use only approved materials provided by the lab. Check bed leveling before every print. Never touch the nozzle or bed while hot.
3️⃣ Preparing the 3D Model
- Searching for open-source 3D models (Thingiverse, Printables, MyMiniFactory, etc.).
- Importing the file into slicing software (PrusaSlicer or Cura).
- Checking the scale, dimensions, and orientation of the part.
- Positioning the object efficiently to optimize print time and reduce failure risk.
4️⃣ Slicing and Settings
- Learning the basic printing parameters: and
- and
- (nozzle and bed)
- Previewing and analyzing the generated GCODE.
- Identifying potential issues through simulation.
5️⃣ Printing Your First Object
- Preparing the build surface (cleaning, adhesive, calibration).
- Starting the print using the SD card or software interface.
- Observing the first layers and troubleshooting adhesion or extrusion issues.
- Monitoring the print and learning to handle basic interruptions or errors.
6️⃣ Maintenance and End of Session
- Removing the finished part safely after cooling.
- Cleaning the nozzle and print bed.
- Storing tools and materials properly.
- Logging the session in Ubikly and reporting any maintenance needs.
